CHILDREN OF JOHN ROBB & MARY THOMSON
John Robb, a blacksmith, married Mary Thomson on 7 June 1786 in Lesmahagow parish. John and Mary had the following children recorded in the Lesmahagow Parish Register. (For further details of John Robb and Mary Thomson - Click here.)
Mary Robb - baptised 21 March 1788, Lesmahagow
Mary Robb was born on 11 March 1788 in Beatins, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, and baptised on 21 March 1788 as recorded in the OPR of Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire.
Mary Robb married Daniel Barr on 17 July 1809 as recorded in the OPR of Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Daniel was born on 4 March 1781 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, the son of son of William Barr and Margaret Scott. Mary and daniel had the following known children:
For the "census" of 1821 Daniel and Mary were resident at Low Dallas, lesmahagow with a total of 4 Males and 4 Femeale recorded in the household.
REF | Name 1 | Name 2 | Name 3 | Name 4 | Address | Males | Females |
163 | Barr | Daniel | Robb | M | Low Dallas | 4 | 4 |
For the census of 1841 it would appear that Daniel has "retired" from actually farming as he was recorded along with his family in Lesmahagow, described as "Independent".

For the census of 1851 Daniel and Mary were resident in Turfholm Street, Lesmahagow. Their three younger daughters were listed as resident with them, along with a Mary Capie, aged 4, identified as a Granddaughter. I believe Mary Capie was born\baptised on 3 October 1846 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, to their daughter Margaret and a William Capie. As Margaret is identified as unmarried in this census it would appear that she and William did not marry.

Thomas Robb - baptised 31 March 1790, Lesmahagow
Thomas never married and for the census of 1841 for Carstairs he was living at Sheaffy Knowe in Carstairs parish. The household also includes his brother John and his wife Marion, and a Mary Robb aged 80. Although in 1841 censuses no relationships were given and all ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5, I think it is reasonable to assume this is Mary Robb, nee Thomson as it is reckoned Mary died in 1846.

John and Helen had seven other known children; Margaret baptised 12 March 1795, Lesmahagow, Mary baptised 29 September 1797, Lesmahagow, Helen baptised 27 June 1798, Lesmahagow, Janet baptised 23 December 1808, Lesmahagow, Jean baptised 3 July 1814, Alexander baptised 29 January 1804, Lesmahagow, John, baptised 7 February 1807, Lesmahagow.

For the census of 1841 John was living with his wife Marion in the household of his elder brother Thomas at Sheaffy Knowe in Carstairs parish, so it would seem reasonable to assume therefore that John and Marion moved from Lesmahagow to Carstairs just prior to the 1841 census

For the census of 1851 John was still living at Sheaffy Knowe with his brother although (like his brother) his status seems to have risen to "Farmer of 100 acres" rather than the 1841 prosaic "Agricultural Labourer"! Their family has increased by two - Margaret, baptised 26 February 1843, and Marion, baptised 3 May 1846. Both baptisms recorded in Carstairs Parish.

In October 1855 John and Marion's eldest son John emigrated to America and at some time thereafter, John and Marion also moved along with the rest of the family to Michigan in the U.S. to live with him. For the census of 1870 John and Marion were established on a farm in the township of Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan along with three of their daughters, Mary, Maggie and Marianna (Marion.), and their son James. Their daughter Jane was living with her husband James Jackson on what one would imagine is the next door property as they are listed as the next family on the census return, and their son John Stewart and their daughter Helen (married William Pomeroy) were also recorded in the township on Lexington for this census. The only child unaccounted for is William born 1840. (??? died pre 1855 in Scotland ???)
